La Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas, celebrada el 22 de Diciembre de 2005, proclamó el 2008 Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra.

Ya comenzó el Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra, declarado por Naciones Unidas y al que ya se han adherido más de 80 países. Su objetivo es generar una mayor conciencia de la importancia de las geociencias para la vida humana y su prosperidad, así como estimular el reconocimiento de las contribuciones sociales de las geociencias en los Sistemas Nacionales de Educación.
La celebración de este año (que concluirá en 2009) persigue concienciar a la sociedad de la relación existente entre Humanidad y Planeta Tierra, y demostrar el enorme potencial de las Ciencias de La Tierra para la creación de un futuro equilibrado y sostenible que permita aumentar la calidad de vida, a la vez que salvaguardar la dinámica planetaria que lo hace posible.
El esfuerzo del Programa de Ciencias del Año internacional del Planeta Tierra, será canalizado a través de 10 temas multidisciplinarios de relevancia para la sociedad: Aguas Subterráneas , Peligros Naturales, Tierra y Salud, Clima, Recursos Naturales, Tierra Profunda, Océanos, Mega Ciudades, Suelos y Tierra y Vida.

The UN General Assembly held on December 22, 2005, proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Planet Earth.

It began the International Year of Planet Earth, declared by the United Nations and which already have joined more than 80 countries. Its aim is to generate greater awareness of the importance of geosciences to human life and prosperity, as well as encourage the recognition of social security contributions of geosciences at the National Systems of Education.

The celebration of this year (2009) aims to sensitize society of the relationship between mankind and earth, and demonstrate the enormous potential of Earth Sciences for the creation of a balanced and sustainable future, which would increase the quality of life, while safeguarding the planetary dynamics that makes it possible. The effort of Sciences Program for the International Year for Planet Earth, will be channelled through 10 multidisciplinary topics of relevance to society: Groundwater, Natural Hazards, Earth and Health, Weather, Natural Resources, Deep Earth, Oceans, Mega Cities Soil and Land and Life.
